  1. You will be leaving immediately so choose “Leave now” in the drop-down menu. Check out the different departure time and routes.
  2. Look at the suggested routes and choose the one that suits you best. If you are unable to see the complete route on the map, zoom out so that it appears.
  3. Show your instructor your final route with the map, bus numbers, bus locations and departure and arrival times.
  4. Try putting in different locations and see what route options show up. Also, try using the drop-down menu options for Depart at and Arrive by options. And lastly, see which routes are chosen if you are walking, driving, or biking.

Optional Assignment:

4.7.0 Accessing Service Canada’s Job Bank

Whether you want to sign up for an email account, join Facebook, apply for income assistance, or set up an online bank account you need to be comfortable with creating an online account. It will be important for you to assess the trustworthiness of the site that offers the account – i.e. will it protect your personal information, what kind of information do they ask of you, is it a site that will bombard you with unwanted advertisements, etc.
This assignment lets you gain some experience in working with very basic online accounts. The government of Canada’s Service Canada offers a job bank to help you find a job you are interested in. Your assignment is to: (1) enter a job and a location in the ‘Job Search’ function, and; (2) subscribe to ‘Job Alerts’.
To view the Job Bank’s home page, click on this link.
Once you are at the website try filling in different jobs and locations and see what comes up.
Next, click on the “Subscribe to Job Alert” link and follow the directions (i.e. Create New Job Alert). To subscribe requires just a job title, a city or postal code, and your email address. You can add as many Job Alerts as you like. You can also unsubscribe to Job Alerts any time you like. Once you have completed the Job Alert show it to your instructor or copy and paste the Job Alert into an email and send it to your instructor.
While you are at the Job Bank site, you may want to check out ‘Explore Careers’ and ‘Job Market Trends’.

If you are unable to conduct a search using the “Single Search” tab, click on the “Books & media” tab and try your search again (sometimes the “Single Search” tab doesn’t work from off-campus computers). Pick a topic or author that interests you. Then send your instructor an email message copying and pasting the information about the resource you found.

Screenshot of the book found when searched for
“History of Songhees”

For example a search in the catalogue on “History of the Songhees” brought me to the following book at the Camosun library:
Title: Songhees pictorial: a history of the Songhees people as seen by outsiders, 1790-1912
ISBN: 0772649642
Item info: 1 copy currently available – Lansdowne campus library.

Please make sure you ask the instructor or instructional assistant if you have any questions about this assignment.
You may be asked to log into the library system to carry out your catalogue search. If you need help setting up your library password, please ask your instructor or instructional assistant for help. If you are working from a computer at one of our partner sites you may not be successful, but you can always set up your library account on your next visit to one of the campus libraries.
